Our mission is to preserve, reclaim, and elevate the histories of Puerto Rico’s LGBTQIA+ community by collecting, curating, and sharing personal narratives—empowering individuals through visibility, representation, and education.
Read how we’re building a living archive with AI: a platform that automates story collection, classification, and preservation. Real stories by our people that, thanks to AI, will never be erased again.
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation under the U.S. Federal Tax Code.
We are building a self-sustaining, AI-powered platform to collect, curate, and archive the stories of Puerto Rico’s LGBTQIA+ community. Our promise is simple: To use accessible, ethical technology to make queer Boricua history impossible to erase again.
Challenging erasure by documenting queer lives—especially those historically excluded from mainstream narratives. Our Story Academies teach how to extract and record personal and community histories as permanent records.
Helping LGBTQIA+ Puerto Ricans see themselves reflected in history, fostering agency, confidence, and dignity. Our Patojies are award-winning, custom avatars that reclaim the slur “pato” as a symbol of queer pride and cultural resistance. Used in our storytelling and education work, they blend playful creativity with powerful self-representation.
Collaborating with universities to integrate these stories into curricula, reshaping how history is taught and who is represented. We partners with the prestigious El Centro (The Center for Puerto Rican Studies in Hunter College, New York)
The Pato Project is proud to partner with CENTRO—The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at CUNY—to preserve and archive the stories of Puerto Rico’s LGBTQIA+ community. Together, we are building the Historias LGBTQIA+ Boricuas Collection, a permanent archive that ensures our narratives are accessible to future generations, educators, and researchers. This partnership affirms the historical value of queer Puerto Rican lives—and places them exactly where they belong: at the heart of our national memory.
On 22 February 2025, we supported The Generations Project's Las Tres Pandemias—a live storytelling workshop and show at El Refugio in Río Piedras. Local LGBTQIA+ voices shared powerful reflections on HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, and gentrification, creating space for healing and preserving our collective memory. These stories now live in a growing oral history archive.
Sistema TV, the Island's PBS affiliate, produced a moving Pride special inspired by our first cohort of Boricua Queer storytellers.
